As a report card grade, “C” designates mediocrity. Place names that begin with that letter are anything but. In spelling and pronunciation, many are quite out of the ordinary for English speakers.

High on my list of out-of-the-ordinary “C“ destinations are: Český Krumlov (a fairytale setting where once upon a time I lived happily for a couple of days), Chichicastenango (it has been 50 years and I can still smell the priest’s incense), Collioure (where Matisse slung his riotous colors), or Cadaqués (the area is surreal thanks to Dalí).
Added to my list are Calcutta; Camden (Maine); Cannon Beach (Oregon); Cape Cod; Central Park; Chichén Itzá (Yucatán); Chinatown (San Fransico); Coeur d'Alene (Idaho); Colmar (France); Cologne (Germany); Colón (Panama); Crater Lake, Carlsbad, and Canyonlands (National Parks); Crupet, Belgium; Cuenca (Spain); and Calico Rock (Arkansas). If you get married in Calico Rock, you will live happily for the rest of your life—at least that has been my experience.

I knew I would forget a “B” or two in my last post, or even a double-B. Said to myself, “I will cross that bridge if I come to it.” It came to me: The Brooklyn Bridge.
In the coming weeks I invite you to continue this photographic journey through the alphabet to "Z". If you know the loveliest, weirdest, or otherwise noteworthy “C” subject, please comment below.
Also share your D List in anticipation of my next installment which might include places unheard of and unpronounceable such as Dakuinuku where I lived for one month, and Dhulikhel with its view of Mt. Everest.
