Recent paintings were accepted for the juried 55th Annual Smoky Hill Art Exhibition which opens in Hays, Kansas on April 27. I am pleased to participate in this exhibition and contribute to the Midwest's growing recognition for its contemporary art scene. I am thrilled that the judge, Michael D. Michaelis, selected two of my paintings for this regional show.
Moroccan Melody
Moroccan Melody is one of a three-painting series with "Melody" in the title. My titles often correlate to music in a time-honored tradition for painters of non-objective compositions. Midnight Melody, another in the "Melody" series, won Honorable Mention in an exhibition titled 12 Squared 2022, at Gallery XII in Wichita, Kansas.

"Pop" Art
"Pop" Art is dedicated to Merle Carr, my late father, who was a sign painter. My creative development started while a child at his feet as he painted signs. His brush strokes ascended, descended, looped and joined gracefully in a swash or straight line. Before I could read the words he painted, I could appreciate the circular, vertical, horizontal, diagonal and serpentine brush strokes that formed letters that composed words. Two decades later, his influence would contribute to my art degree. Now seven decades later, his influence continues as I paint - occasionally with brushes and tools that I inherited. The numbers in this piece were painted using brass stencils found in my father's shop. "Pop" Art was on display at Sedona Arts Center in Sedona, Arizona. There it was awarded Honorable Mention in Numbers Exhibition 2023.
